- Can you hit the right note as a music reviewer? - The classical music website, Bachtrack.com is looking for music students and music graduates to write engaging reviews about opera and classical music. The website can be found at http://www.bachtrack.com and is the largest classical concert finder on the web, where you can find out what’s on around the world with 10,000 forthcoming events. A team of about 30 reviewers in the UK and USA write over 60 or more reviews a month in classical music, opera and ballet / dance. Bachtrach are keen to hear from new reviewers who are able to write in a style that will motivate new people to attend performances.
Reviewers are asked to write about the works as well as the performance because these reviews attach to the works and performers for all time and they help people new to a work discover more about it before they decide to attend a concert. An example of a typical review can be found by clicking the review button under the menu:
http://www.bachtrack.com/find-events/what/work=969-piano-concerto-no--1-in-d-minor--op-15.
Bachtrack's whole aim is to get more people into classical music so they ask reviewers to have an enthusiastic style rather than being patronizing, pompous or full of jargon which can’t be easily understood. If you feel you are able to write in a strong narrative style which draws the reader in and holds their interest, then this would be an ideal opportunity to get a foot on the first rung of the music journalism ladder.
Anyone interested needs to email Alison Karlin with a brief CV, highlighting their musical education and experience. Alison will then tell you what Bachtrack need by way of a sample review. Once Alison has received your review and got back to tell let you know you have been accepted, as a reviewer you will choose which concerts you want to attend. You will be sent a monthly email asking for next month’s requests and Bachtrack will source tickets for you and let you know when these have been granted. Alison cannot guarantee two tickets, but she will try. You should be able to write at least two reviews most months and you will need to submit your reviews direct to the site within 48 hours of the performance.
As a sweetener, any of Bachtrack's reviewers travelling to another part of the UK or abroad will be able to get free tickets to most classical concerts and opera wherever they are. Also two reviewers have recently been picked off by PR companies to work for them. So writing for Bachtrack will definitely help reviewers’ CVs and can lead to further opportunities.
To apply, please email your CV to Alison Karlin at: alison.karlin@bachtrack.com
- Would you like to play the organ in a local church? - Over the years several churches in the Exeter area have had happy arrangements with University students who have played for their services in term-time and there is currently quite a need for this, as several churches in or near Exeter are interested.
David Oates, Vice-President of Exeter and District Organists' Association, is interested in hearing from any student who would like to become an organist for such a church.
As well as getting useful experience, payment and access to practice facilities, David can offer support from experienced local organists. Equally as important is the knowledge that student organists would be made very welcome in the local community. The services can vary from "hymns only without pedals once a month" to full sung eucharists and evensongs - whatever is appropriate to your level of playing.
If you would like to find out more, please phone David on 01392 279722, or email him at mail@davalo.co.uk
