Exeter event to examine future of energy

Where will our energy come from in the future? Can we find a source of energy that is both sustainable and affordable? What can be done to tackle energy security?

These issues will be addressed by James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK, at an evening event, open to all, at the University of Exeter on Monday 23 March 2009.

This is the latest in a series of Shaping the Future events, organised by the University of Exeter and supported by the Met Office, to bring business, science and the community together.

James Smith was appointed Chairman of Shell UK in 2004 and has been with Shell since 1983, working on all of the Group’s major business. His lecture will draw on Shell’s global, long-term energy scenarios. These scenarios assess how society will respond to the triple energy challenge of sustainability, security and affordability. They reflect hard truths about energy demand and environmental stresses. James Smith will consider what society ‘ought’ to do in response and assess what society could ‘choose’ to do in reality. He will then consider how we can find a way forward together.

James Smith Chairman of Shell UK said: "Especially in the midst of a recession, stepping up to the Energy Challenge means ensuring the short-term and the long-term stay firmly connected.  The lessons being learned today about trust and collaboration will be vital if we are to have a secure energy future and successfully tackle climate change."
