University subsidises bike locks for staff and students

The University of Exeter Cycle Forum is pleased to launch a new scheme which will see subsidised bike locks put on sale for staff and students.

On Tuesday 2 June a limited number of silver-rated locks with a retail price of over £35 will be sold for £5 cash whilst stocks last.

The launch event takes place from 12-2pm outside Devonshire House steps, and every student and member of staff is eligible to buy one lock (upon production of University ID).

The locks will afterwards be available from the Parking Office in Lafrowda House, with payment of £5 by cheque or credit card. The University is using car parking revenue to subsidise the price.

The police will also be running a property marking stall at the same time, so that cyclists can have their bikes added to a local security scheme.

Karen Gallagher, Sustainability Manager at the University of Exeter says: “Cycling-related activity has increased significantly on campus this year. The partnership between staff, students, the University, the Students’ Guild and Cycle Exeter has been really fruitful.”

This is part of the University’s ongoing work to encourage cycling as part of strategy ‘Unlocking the potential’, in conjunction with Cycle Exeter. Other incentives include new bike parking facilities, a cycle mileage rate of 20p a mile for business travel, discounted bike purchase scheme and free cycle training.
