STAR pupils get top GCSE results

Students at St James School who are already enrolled on the Sutton Trust supported STAR (Sutton Trust Academic Routes) programme, have achieved remarkable results in their GCSE’s.

Adam Rose achieved 4A*,6A and 1B, Alex Seabrook 3A*, 5A, 3B & 1C and Tsvetelina Stankova 3A & 5B.

Sixty students from non-privileged backgrounds from four schools across the county have been chosen to take part in the STAR scheme, with the University of Exeter providing the support to the students for two years between GCSE and A levels. The scheme is designed to help Devon’s young people on the path to higher education.

Emma Stephenson, the University’s Outreach Manager commented, ‘We are delighted that the STAR programme will be providing direct support to these able and enthusiastic students. We hope we can help them make good decisions about their futures and to provide a pathway onto our courses if that’s a direction they decide they want to go in.’

The University has been working closely with St James School for several years. Students regularly take part in activities on campus including higher education information days, masterclasses and residential programmes as well as being well represented in the annual Excellence in Exeter Awards Ceremony each autumn. Most recently, the University has become a partner in the charitable Trust that will continue to support the improvements in aspirations and attainment at the school over the last few years.
