University announces Honorary Graduands for summer ceremonies

Key figures, from sporting heroes to scientists, will join more than 3000 students at the University of Exeter’s summer graduation ceremonies from 12 to 19 July.

The journalist and newsreader Moira Stuart gets the week off to a flying start and from the world of sport, Sir Ian Botham cricketing legend and charity campaigner and Dr. Ann Redgrave, Lady Redgrave, Olympic rower and former Chief Medical Officer to GB Rowing will attend ceremonies on the 14 July.

Other important figures representing a wide spectrum of society include Shami Chakrabati, director of Liberty; Dame Julia Cleverdon, Vice President of Business in the Community; Eric Dancer, Lord Lieutenant of Devon; Professor Dame Sally Davies, Director General of Research and Development  and Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health and NHS; Professor Jane Knight, academic and educationalist; Richard Lambert, Director General of the Confederation of British Industry; Deborah Meaden, entrepreneur and ‘Dragons Den’ panellist; Professor Alison Richard, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge; Sir John Rose, Chief Executive of Rolls Royce plc; Fiona Shackleton, lawyer and partner with Payne Hicks Beach – Personal Solicitor to Prince William of Wales and Prince Harry of Wales; and Baroness Young, former Chair of the Care Quality Commission and former Chief Executive of the Environment Agency.

The arts are represented by Kuljit Bhamra, composer of contemporary Indian music; Elaine Goodwin, an artist specialising in mosaics; and Peter Randall-Page, artist and sculptor.

The University of Exeter’s Chancellor, Floella Benjamin OBE will preside over all the ceremonies. She commented ‘This is a time for celebration for our students and their families, a culmination of years of hard work and an opportunity for us to send them out into the world with a valuable Exeter degree and the full backing of our staff. Our honorary graduands are leaders in their fields and we very much look forward to welcoming them here. They are people the University is extremely proud to be associated with.’

Graduation ceremonies take place from 12 to 17 July in the Northcott Theatre, University of Exeter, at 9.00am, 11.30am, 2.30pm and 4.30pm daily. The ceremonies for students from the University’s Cornwall Campus are being held in the inspirational surroundings of Truro Cathedral on July 19, at 10.30am and 3.00pm.
