Since the mid-1990s, Folk.us has been at the forefront of Service User, Patient and Carer Involvement in Health and Social Care Research.  Folk.us was challenging and changing the culture of research in health and social care from its inception. In 2000 Folk.us became a Department of Health funded programme and continued to receive DH funding for the next 13 years.  Over the years a unique strength of Folk.us has been to identify what was really needed to change to ensure that involvement was meaningful and that its impact meant the research was relevant and real to those it was about.  Folk.us encouraged and supported patients, service users and carers being involved in helping to develop and design research with academics and clinicians. Folk.us also challenged and supported institutional systems to respond to and support involvement. Folk.us was also pioneering in supporting patients, service users and carers to conduct their own research.

Past Caring was a Carer led project supported, developed and undertaken with Folk.us and part funded by PenCLAHRC.  Past Caring, winner of the ‘Outstanding Public Engagement 2013 Exeter Impact Award’, is the epitome of everything that Folk.us has held dear.  Past Caring: A study of bereaved carers, by carers, with carers, for carers.
