CLES Annual Lecture 2014: Harriet Lamb - Dangerous Ideas Wanted: Fairtrade in 2050

The College of Life and Environmental Sciences is delighted to announce this year’s Annual Lecture, given by Honorary Graduate Harriet Lamb, CBE (Hon LLD, 2011). Open to all Students/Staff/Alumni.

Event details

Harriet is the Chief Executive of Fairtrade International, a global organisation which seeks to secure a better deal for farmers and workers. As Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation for just over a decade, Harriet oversaw a huge increase in UK sales, from £30m to £1.5 billion by 2012. The number of products carrying the FAIRTRADE mark has grown from 80 to more than 4,500, which has enabled some 7.5 million farmers and workers and their families across the world to participate in Fairtrade. A flourishing grassroots social movement has also grown across the UK. There are now 500 Fairtrade Towns – where a commitment to Fairtrade has been made by the council, shops and businesses – together with nearly 6,000 Fairtrade places of worship and 127 Fairtrade universities – including the University of Exeter.

As Fairtrade celebrates 20 years in the UK, Harriet will look back at these achievements and also discuss the challenges facing the movement for the future.
