Exetra event- Careers in broadcasting and the media

With expert knowledge from a journalist, an editor and two producers

We all know the faces and voices of the most famous people working in radio and television broadcasting, but for each one of these media personalities, there are hundreds of other highly skilled people who work behind the scenes within the fields of writing, producing, editing, and design.

Event details

Exetra – the recent alumni network – is organising a specialist networking event for broadcasting and the media at Balls Brothers in central London. This event will focus on careers in front of and behind the camera, looking at what opportunities there are in 2015. If you have ever thought about working in this area, come along to learn more. Influential alumni from the industry will open the evening with personal insights and experiences and you will have the chance to ask them questions and gain advice.

This is a fantastic opportunity to network with key people in the industry, gain tips and advice and meet fellow alumni working in media and broadcasting related professions.

Our panel of experts so far include:

Adrian Hobart, Ancient History 1994
Global Sports Assistant Editor, BBC World Service Group

Adrian began his broadcasting career with a chance meeting with Jeremy Vine while he was a tour guide in Cambridge back in 1990. Jeremy suggested that Adrian thought about it, and it was Exeter University’s student radio station – then URE 963 – that gave him the platform to make that come true. After qualifying as a broadcast journalist from Cardiff in 1995, Adrian started his full-time career at Gemini FM in Exeter. He joined the BBC in 1996, initially in local radio in Surrey and Sussex, before joining the BBC World Service in 1999, specialising in Sport. Adrian has been in that area ever since – covering the Olympics, World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations and Wimbledon during that time. In November 2011 he became the Assistant Editor for BBC World Sport; his team broadcasts to an estimated 150 million people a week worldwide on TV and radio.

Emma Cook, History 2002
TV Producer, BBC Sport

Emma has worked for the BBC for over a decade in various capacities – as a journalist, a broadcaster and is currently working as a TV producer. Her current role is with BBC Sport based at Media City in Salford, which makes all the sport programmes you see on BBC One and Two. The highlight for Emma so far has been leading the coverage from the rowing at London 2012 but she has also been lucky enough to be part of the team at Football World Cups, the Winter Olympics, the Boat Races the Commonwealth Games and Wimbledon. Emma is currently putting together some of the mulit-platform editorial plans for the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the World Athletics Championships in Beijing this summer.

Andrew Bullock, English 2006
Producer/Writer

Andrew Bullock has been a professional in the media for 10 years, since graduating from Exeter in summer 2006. Whilst at the university, he did a transfer year to the University of California Santa Barbara, where he took classes in English, screenwriting, creative writing and producing/directing for screen. Since then he has worked on the production side for companies such as ITV, BBC TWO, Sky ARTS and Channel 5. In recent years he has produced a flagship programme for a new local TV channel, written a magazine column about culture and arts, launched a successful blog, presented a TV show, worked as a pundit and is just about to launch a new web series of interviews through his own media brand.

Rachel Corcoran, American and Commonwealth Arts 1998
Freelance Journalist
Rachel is one of the most widely published freelance journalists in the fields of celebrity, lifestyle and travel writing. Having begun her career in national magazines and newspapers, Rachel became freelance over 16 years ago. Since then, she has worked with a wide variety of actors, musicians, TV and sports personalities to help them promote their work in national and international online and print media.
