The hawza is the Muslim Shi’a traditional school that represents both a scholarly institution and a place of learning connecting all major Shi’a communities: this exhibition is the first of its kind to portray with intimacy a complex social construct with remarkable continuity between the pre-modern and contemporary periods.
The work has been realised between Syria and Bahrain in 2010 and, by overcoming geographical limitations, it offers a rounded representation of a space carefully protected from external presence.
