CANCELLED:Seminar by Dr Tamara Bibby (Institute of Education) ‘The Creative Self? School? Classroom?’

Tamara Bibby's current work – and this seminar – engages with the work of D W Winnicott and others to develop different ways of thinking about key issues at the heart of pedagogy and the desires and defences of professionals located in educational institutions; specifically omnipotence (the desire to know what is best, to know how to ‘reach’ all learners), creativity (the desire to respond to our own ideas and sense of self), compliance (the normalised expectations of behaviours and outcomes) and the use of an object (how we interact with the sometimes challenging engagements with students and curriculum).

Abstract

In recent work I have drawn on different psychoanalytic theories to make sense of primary school children’s developing learner-identities. With an overall message that the project of learning and teaching are both ‘impossible’ and necessary, I challenged teachers to find ways of walking a tightrope between their own desires and defences (orientated towards the institution, the learners, one’s own biography, learning etc.) and the imperatives of reacting supportively in relation to those in their classes. My current work – and this seminar – engages with the work of D W Winnicott and others to develop different ways of thinking about key issues at the heart of pedagogy and the desires and defences of professionals located in educational institutions; specifically omnipotence (the desire to know what is best, to know how to ‘reach’ all learners), creativity (the desire to respond to our own ideas and sense of self), compliance (the normalised expectations of behaviours and outcomes) and the use of an object (how we interact with the sometimes challenging engagements with students and curriculum).  During the Autumn term I will be working on these ideas and will bring a (more focussed!) chapter or paper to discuss during the seminar.

Tamara Bibby spent ten years as a primary school teacher and primary mathematics specialist in London before moving into the university sector. Her research is primarily focussed on developing ways of making sense of teaching/learning in – or perhaps the nature of – pedagogic relationships. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Education, London.
