Money, Mammon and Ministry: State Financing of Religious Communities in Europe?
In this lecture Professor van den Broeke will examine how European states have used “church taxes” and similar instruments to fund religious groups, and how these groups have organized their finances internally, using these and other funds.

Leon van den Broeke is Assistant Professor Religion, Law, and Society, and Chair of the Centre for Religion and Law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This Centre is a joint venture of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Theology. His research interests include Law, Ecclesiology, Church Polity, Church History, and Practical Theology. He is currently writing a second doctoral dissertation, this time in legal studies, on funeral law from the perspective of freedom of religion. He is a Distinguished Academic Associate at the Centre for Law and Religion at Cardiff, Wales, and holder of the John Lewis Memorialship 2013, Cardiff.
