Extreme Weather and You

A public event on extreme weather and climate science

Extreme Weather Event is a new kind of event offering you a unique opportunity to get the story straight from the scientists, and to put your experience of extreme weather here in Devon at the heart of the debate.

Event details

Who should attend?

This is a public event for everyone to attend. Please note; the evening session is ticketed.

Information

Please download a full programme for the day.

What is the event about?

The winter of 2013/14 saw devastating floods and storms in Devon. This winter other parts of the country have shared in the misery.

With so many people flooded and so much damage to infrastructure, the question arises: how do we live with extreme weather events? And how will our future look?

Extreme Weather Event is a new kind of event offering you a unique opportunity to get the story straight from the scientists, and to put your experience of extreme weather here in Devon at the heart of the debate.

The day is split into two parts:

Extreme Weather and You (11.00 - 17.00)

This is a whole day of talks and workshops with a variety of family-based activities which are free to attend.

In our workshops you can discuss your experience of extreme weather, and engage directly with those researching extreme weather and climate change in Exeter.

Our talks will explain the scientific state of knowledge, complemented by a wide range of scientific activities for the whole family.

A question of extremes, including Climate Change Question Time (19.00 - 21.30)

Our ticketed evening event is a great opportunity to hear one of Britain's best-loved science broadcasters and an expert guest presenter; Helen Czerski, science broadcaster, and Dr Peter Stott, of the Met Office.

See below for more details.

Programme - daytime

Time Location Speakers Activity
11.00 - 17.00 Forum Street (mezzanine)

An interactive science fair for all ages including activities for the whole family. The fair will introduce you to ideas about weather and climate.

Build your own rain gauge and start making your own weather observations!

11.00 - 17.00 Seminar Rooms

Double Elephant Print Workshops

Our experienced Double Elephant workshop leaders invited you to create your own original prints, reflecting your thoughts on climate change and your own weather experiences.

11.00 Seminar Room 8 Professor Richard Betts How will climate change impact our world?
11.00 Seminar Room 10 Dr Ewan Woodley and Professor Stewart Barr The Crediton Project: how one local community talks about climate change.
12.00 Seminar Room 8 Professor Liz Bentley How do we talk about extreme weather?
12.00 Seminar Room 10 Dr Robert Dunn and colleagues A day in the life of the Met Office
14.00 Seminar Room 8 Dr Ewan Woodley Climate change conversations in our local communities
14.00 Seminar Room 10 Dr Matt Hawcroft Storms and severe weather
15.00 Seminar Room 8 Professor Mat Collins El Niño and our local weather
15.00 Seminar Room 10 Dr Ewan Woodley and colleagues How do we act on climate change?
16.00 Seminar Room 8 Professor Stewart Barr Why is climate change such a hotly debated topic?
16.00 Seminar Room 10 Dr Robert Dunn and colleagues The Met Office next generation: what's it like to be an early career scientist?

Programme - evening

19.00 - A question of extremes: how is our climate changing?

Helen Czerski and Dr Peter Stott will be exploring extreme weather, including the South West, and how it fits into a pattern of changing climate.

Helen and Peter will take you on an entertaining journey through the science of weather and climate, and show how there is much more to climate change than global warming.

Find out how the climate varies from a host of fascinating natural processes, and how science is making progress at helping all of us be more resilient to its unexpected impacts.

20.15 - Climate change question time

After Helen and Peter explore climate change and extreme weather you will be able to participate in a discussion on how climate and weather affects you and your community. This session will feature an expert panel:

Professor Dame Julia Slingo OBE FRS, Chief Scientist of the Met Office
Professor Peter Cox, University of Exeter
Professor Paul Hardaker, Chief Executive of the Institute of Physics (Chair)

Registration

The daytime events (11.00 - 17.00) are free for all to attend.

The evening event will be ticketed; please book through Exeter Phoenix.
