Exeter Geography hosts: Missing Maps Mapathon

As a part of Geography Awareness Week the Missing Maps team are organising Exeter Geography hosts: Missing Maps.

Event details

As the event is hosted by Geography, we welcome a strong turnout from staff, postdoctoral researchers and students. We also warmly welcome participation from others interested in participating. Even if you can only call by briefly, it would be great to see you and you will still be able to contribute.

What is the Missing Maps Project?
The Missing Maps project is one of the largest digital humanitarian efforts in history. It is a collaboration between the Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) which aims to produce open source digital maps of unmapped and vulnerable regions.

How does this work?
The maps are produced in three stages:

1) People from all over the world trace over satellite imagery in OpenStreetMap (this is YOU!).
2) Community volunteers validate the maps and add local detail (e.g. street names).
3) Humanitarian organisations use the maps to plan risk reduction and disaster response activities to save lives.

You can see more info on the website www.missingmaps.org.

Do I need to be a technical wizard?
No! The project is designed so that it's easy for everyone can get involved regardless of technical skills. We'll also teach you how use the program, though it only takes a few minutes as it is designed to be simple!
