BSRA (British Society for Research on Ageing) open lecture

The 67th BSRA Annual Scientific Meeting is coming to the University of Exeter on 10-12 July and day one features an open lecture for members of the public.

Event details

Hosted by Professor Judith Campisi, from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the US, the lecture will focus on the cellular basis for ageing in humans.

The last two decades has seen ageing research emerge from a largely descriptive science to one that is now rich in testable hypotheses. Importantly, these hypotheses raise hopes for interventions that have the potential to delay or mitigate multiple age-related phenotypes and pathologies.

Nonetheless, there remain many puzzles and unknowns, particularly with regard to human life span and health span. Whereas the field is in general agreement that ageing is driven by a few fundamental biological processes, there is little consensus on how many such processes exist, how they interact with each other and whether and to what extent interventions that alter these processes have physiological costs.

We’ll be discussing the latest research, how we can better understand the ageing process, and considering how we design and implement therapeutic approaches.
