Event details

Our Shaping the Future reception will be hosted by Exeter alumnus Dr Richard Ward, CEO of Lloyd’s (Chemistry 1979, PhD 1983, Hon LLD 2009) and Chair of Alumni Network Group and the Professor Mark Goodwin, Dean of College of Life and Environmental Sciences. Dr Ward has kindly allowed us to use the magnificent Adam Room at Lloyd's, London.

The Adam Room was designed in 1763 and was originally part of Bowood House in Wiltshire. It is considered an important early work by Scottish architect Robert Adam and was designed shortly after he had returned from Rome.

By the mid-50s Bowood House needed a great deal of renovation work and it was decided to demolish a section of the property, of which the Adam room was a part. The room was moved across the south of England to its new home at Lloyd’s in the heart of London.
In 1986 it was moved again and provides a striking contrast to the post-modern architecture of the present Lloyd’s building.

It is used by the Council of Lloyd’s and this is a rare opportunity to see inside this stunning and historic room. This room was originally designed by Robert Adam in 1763 as part of Bowood House in Wiltshire. The whole room was purchased by Lloyd's and now provides a striking contrast with the post-modern architecture of the Lloyd's building.

Speakers will be:

Professor Ken Haynes, Professor of Fungal Biology
Predicting the unpredictability of biology: unlocking the secrets of systems

Professor Tim Lenton, Chair in Climate Change and Earth Systems Science
Future-proofing the Planet:  Solutions for a sustainable Earth

Professor Philippe Young, Associate Professor
Simulating Reality: From Cricket to Crickets
