"The COVID-19 Responses in Medical Education: The Hong Kong Experience"

Professor Paul Lai

Prof. Lai graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and joined the Department of Surgery in 1990.  He received surgical training in Hong Kong and Edinburgh, specializing in hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery.  Apart from being an active practicing surgeon, teacher for medical students and trainer for surgical trainees, Prof. Lai is actively involved in both clinical and basic scientific research.  He is also the editor-in-chief of the journal Surgical Practice and a member of editorial boards of a number of local and international academic journals, such as British Journal of Surgery and Annals of Surgical Oncology.  Prof. Lai is the Director of the Office of Medical Education (OME) since 2014 and the Office serves to oversee the MBChB curriculum of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof. Lai has developed an interest in surgical outcome research, quality and risk management, healthcare policy, medico-legal and mediation.  He has studied for a Masters Degree in Medical Law at the University of Northumbria and he is an accredited mediator in Hong Kong under the Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited (HKMAAL).  He has contributed to training and education of healthcare professionals in various areas and is an experienced examiner in undergraduate and professional examinations. In the field of hospital administration, Prof. Lai was previously the Honorary Chief of Service in the Department of Surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Cluster Coordinator for Surgical Services in New Territories East Cluster from 2008 to 2018.  He was elected as a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators, a fellow of the Faculty of Public Health and a fellow of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine (Administrative Medicine) in 2018.  He has also been appointed as the Medical Director, Quality & Safety at the CUHK Medical Centre since July 2019.

Professor Carmen Wong BSc(UK)  MBBCh(UK)  MRCGP(UK)  MEd(UK)  FHEA

Prof. Carmen Wong is Associate Professor of Medical Education and Family Medicine, JC School of Public Health and Primary Care and Assistant Dean (Education), The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  Prof. Carmen Wong graduated from the Cardiff University School of Medicine (UK) with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and a Medical Degree. Dr. Wong is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK) with experience as a physician and in clinical management in the NHS (UK).  She holds a portfolio of medical experiences including family medicine, offender health, port health, medical evacuation logistics and corporate health and pandemic consultancy.  Prof. Carmen Wong is clinical coordinator of Family Medicine module and Chair of Taskforce on Clinical Communication Skills and received the Faculty Teaching Award, University Education Award and University Grants Council (UGC) Education award in 2020. Educational research interests include use of online learning and learner wellbeing and development.  She has obtained numerous teaching grants.  Her works include the development of electronic medical tools such as the CUHK medical audio glossary for health professionals, blended and experiential learning in clinical communication skills, social responsibility and interdisciplinary curriculum design and implementation.

Dr. Wong continues to practice as an honorary resident of the Hospital Authority in Family Medicine and is the director of the CUHK Centre of Research and Promotion of Women’s Health (CRPWH) and associate director of the Office of Medical Education (OME) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
