Silent Voices: confronting the hostile archive: Material Culture workshop: creativity and clay.
A hands-on workshop exploring material culture and creativity as ways to get closer to those whose voices aren’t heard through traditional archival material. This session is for anyone, staff or student, who is interested in the experiences of people in the past who were marginalised and/or excluded from the written historical record, whose experiences don’t show up in written documents, or who lived in societies without written cultures. We’ll be engaging in a free-flowing discussion of all kinds of material culture as a means to learning about the past, from the women in Tiya Miles’ best-selling All That She Carried (excerpt available through the library here) to the inhabitants of a medieval priory in Kent. And while we do this, we’ll also be exploring experimental/practice-based research methods by playing with clay!
14:30-15:30: After this workshop, please join us for tea, coffee, biscuits and a chance to to continue the conversation further. Laver common room (8th Floor).
