Senior Lecturer Dr Christine Hauskeller will take part in a debate organised by the University of Exeter Debating Society tomorrow (Friday) evening.

Billed as “The Designer Baby Debate”, the motion is ‘This house supports genetic screening of embryos’.

Dr Hauskeller, whose  research interests focus on clinical decision-making and the governance of and emerging practices in biomedicine and synthetic biology, will propose the motion, together with Sarah Norcross , Director of the Progress Educational Trust. The motion will be opposed by Josephine Quintavalle of Comment on Reproductive Ethics (CORE) and The Rt Revd Colin Fletcher OBE, the Bishop of Dorchester.

Each of the four speakers has five minutes to put their argument, beginning with the proposer and alternating between each side.  There is then a question and answer session where each side responds to audience questions.  The debate finishes with a two minute summary from one speaker on each side of the panel. There is a vote on the motion before and after the debate.

The debate will take place in Newman A at 7.00pm on Friday 18 October.
