Information
Open presentation from Stephen Reicher, Professor of Psychology at the University of St Andrews. Part of the Identities and Beliefs and Societal and Lifestyle Shifts themes.
Stephen will reconsider the notion of 'the banality of evil', looking at psychological and historical work on obedience, with a special focus on Milgram's famous studies.
He will show how traditional explanations in terms of 'inattention' cannot explain the patterning of conformity and non-conformity and argue instead that obedient participants are both aware of and celebrate their actions.
He will then explore how authorities actively intercede to engage followers and thereby to produce conformity.
All are welcome to attend this event which will include a question and answer session.
