Why develop good research data management skills?

• Good research data management is part of good research practice. Creating or collecting research data that is documented well and shared and stored according to ethical and legal requirements should be part of your skill set as a researcher.
• Funding bodies are increasingly asking for a data management plan as part of their application process.
• The idea that publicly-funded research should be openly and freely available (when appropriate) is promoted by both RCUK  and the University of Exeter
• In order for data to be reused, reproduced and shared effectively, it needs to have been looked after and documented properly throughout the research lifecycle. Putting your data on Open Access can increase your visibility as a researcher, prevent unnecessary duplication of data sets and accelerate discovery.

This training session will be interactive and cover issues such as data management planning, documenting and contextualising your data, formatting and organising data, storing your data, data security, data transfer, encryption and file sharing, data confidentiality, legal and ethical issues, anonymisation, data copyright, re-using data and Open Access to data. We will look at these areas briefly and provide you with information on where you can find further information on these topics.

Level:  For early to mid-stage research students, but most of the session will be relevant to all
