Event details
Attendees will learn about recent intelligence gathered from workshops held by the EPSRC on the Engineering Grand Challenges call, which will launch in January 2015.
To support planning on how the University of Exeter will respond to these future challenges, and the imminent call, we are holding a Think Tank session.
The session will begin with a short presentation by Professors Alex Pavic and Oana Ghita about the recent EPSRC-led 2-day retreat and workshops which focused around major global issues, e.g. energy, bioengineering, food security and quality.
Following the presentation we will split into groups to brainstorm ideas on how the university and its networks will respond to these challenges.
The seven themes identified at the retreat are listed below followed by example challenges. We are currently working through challenges aligned with Exeter’s strengths. Additional suggestions for topics to feature in these sessions are welcomed.
- Risk and Resilience in a Connected World
- Controlling Cell Behaviour
- Engineering from Atoms to Applications
- Bespoke Engineering
- Big Data for Engineering Futures
- Suprastructures – integrating resource infrastructure under constraint
- Engineers at the Heart of Public Decision Making
- Can we engineer healthy humans?
- How do we ensure we have zero waste?
- Can we develop a universal material printer?
- How could we end the use of carbon fuels by 2050?
- How can we monitor and control cells?
- How will we provide the global population with nutritious and delicious food?
