Prof Han is Professor of English at Peking University, specialising in eighteenth-century literature and in translation studies. After taking his BA in English Language and Literature at Jilin University in 1982 and his MA from Shandong University in 1984, Prof Han studied for his PhD in Cornell University, graduating in 1993. He has lectured at Shandong University, Mary Washington College, and Cornell University. He has published extensively, both in Chinese and in English, on the English eighteenth-century novelists Henry Fielding, Samuel Richardson and Laurence Sterne.

His books include Henry Fielding: Form, History, Ideology (Beijing 1997), Henry Fielding: A Critical Study (Beijing 2010), and (with Shen Dan and Wang Liya) Studies on English and American Narrative Theory (2006). He has a longstanding interest in literary and cultural exchange between China and the West, researching and publishing on the reception of Henry Fielding in China, and on the image of the West in Cao Xuequin’s eighteenth-century novel A Dream of Red Mansions.
