Interactive science fair and Research Uncovered talks

Part of British Science Week

Event details

Who can attend?

Everyone is welcome to attend this open event which is part of British Science Week.

Information

Come and explore our interactive science fair in the Forum!

This will be an exciting opportunity to engage with scientists, have a go with science equipment, and learn about a wide range of scientific research. There will be a wide range of interactive stands displaying cutting-edge research from teams including Psychology, Astrophysics, Biosciences, and Geography. You'll be able to try the Wechsler intelligence test, brain training exercises, and have a go at tick tombola.

Following the fair two University researchers will be delivering exciting talks on wildfires and machine learning in the Alumni Auditorium. We're then pleased to welcome Professor Mark McCaughrean from the European Space Agency as a special guest.

Everyone is welcome to attend and there are four parts to the day:

11.30 - an interactive science fair in the Forum featuring a wide range of activities.

15.00 - Where's the cow? Finding objects in video. Professor Richard Everson.

16.00 - How do you measure a wildfire? Understanding fire effects on the Earth System. A public talk by Dr Claire Belcher.

18.00 (for 18.30) - Rosetta: to catch a comet! A guest lecture from Professor Mark McCaughrean, European Space Agency. Please book through Eventbrite.

Research Uncovered lectures

How do you measure a wildfire? Understanding fire effects on the Earth System.

Dr Claire Belcher

The University of Exeter wildFIRE Lab is an exciting purpose-built experimental laboratory designed for testing the flammability of natural fuels. The lab is used to gather information about how natural plant materials burn, which Dr Claire Belcher and her team are using to develop tools that may allow us to better understand the impact of wildfires. The team also explore the role that wildfires have played in shaping Earth’s ecosystems both in the present, and in the past.

Claire will take you on a tour of the exciting new laboratory's capabilities and talk about some of the research questions that the fire testing equipment is allowing her and her team to explore.

Where's the cow? Finding objects in video.

Professor Richard Everson

The human visual system is adept at identifying objects in a scene and following them as they move, but emulating this is a major challenge for machines.  This talk will explore computational ways of identifying a objects in images and videos. Examples will include tracking cows to detect lameness, spotting otters, tracking crickets and bees, and identifying the vertebrae and discs in MRI scans.

Registration

No registration is required for the activities between 11.30 - 17.00, but please book for the evening lecture.
