Event details
Information:
Collaborative PhDs are doctoral programmes situated within Universities that involve organisations and people beyond academia. They are marketed as an opportunity for doctoral students to gain first-hand experience of work outside of a university environment and enhance their employability skills. Driven by research council funding, they potentially offer an alternative model of academic research.
This type of PhD requires a unique set of skills to successfully manage the University/external organisation relationship. It presents challenges for both the doctoral candidate and the supervisor in areas such as time management, partnership working and collaborating in research.
Event aims:
Dr Robin Durie (Politics) and Dr Jonathan Memel (English) will share their experiences as a supervisor and recent doctoral candidate. We will then break into small groups for facilitated discussion around the following points:
- What do you see as being the challenges faced by collaborative PhDs?
- How does the nature of the collaborative work feature in your thesis? If it doesn’t, do you think it could?
- How can you shape your examination panel to reflect the collaborative nature of your PhD?
- How can we be reflective in our practice as we collaborate with external organisations?
- If the University was to develop a protocol for collaborative PhDs, what would you like to see included?
The feedback and discussions at this event will help inform the work of the Public Engagement Manager in supporting the Postgraduate community.
Who should attend?
This Network event is open to all academic and Professional Services staff (research managers, administrators, project officers, events managers, etc.) who are:
