Research First Week (RFW)
RFW were introduced in the College for Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences (CEMPS) to provide dedicated time to be spent on research development activities.
This year’s event will include workshops and presentations on REF/Impact, fellowship funding opportunities, grant writing, publication writing, research marketing, and more.
Prof Ken Evans, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of CEMPS, will welcome you at 9 am to the opening presentations given by Astrid Wissenburg, Director of Research, and Sean Fielding, Director of Innovation, Impact and Business.
09.10 - 09.30: Astrid Wissenburg
Astrid started her position as Director of Research at the University of Exeter in January 2016. Hitherto, she was Director for Research, Scholarship and Quality at the Open University, with responsibility for the strategic development of research and scholarship across the University's faculties and institutes, and the quality assurance and enhancement of the University's taught programmes.
In her presentation "Research and Research Services 202x" Astrid will address
- External environment for research
- Research and Impact Strategy 2015-2020
- Research Services Directorate – transformation process update.
09.30 - 09.50: Sean Fielding
As Director of Innovation, Impact and Business, Sean handles the University of Exeter support for collaboration with external partners whether for research, education or commercial business such as spin-outs and licensing.
He is also responsible for strategic alliances, regional economic development and the generation of worldwide impact from the University’s research. Each year his team works on up to 1,000 projects worth around £40-50million.

- How IIB is organised
- How IIB can help EMPS.
