Doing, Discussing and Developing Capacity in Thematic Qualitative Data Analysis

This two-day event has been specifically designed for doctoral researchers who have already generated some of their own qualitative data and who are exploring the possibility of thematically analysing their data.

Event details

A two-day research workshop for doctoral researchers hosted by the Graduate School of Education, University of Exeter, on the 16th and 17th May 2017.

This two-day event has been specifically designed for doctoral researchers who have already generated some of their own qualitative data and who are exploring the possibility of thematically analysing their data. The event will focus on:

  • DOING thematic analysis: The event will largely comprise of hands-on practical workshops where participants will work with a data set in order to explore and try out many different aspects of this  analytical approach, including: documenting the data, managing the data, expanding the data, coding, and telling the story  of the data.
  • DISCUSSING thematic analysis: The practical workshops will be interspersed with discussion sessions which will provide the space for researchers to reflect on this practise, to share their expertise and to learn from others.
  • DEVELOPING CAPACITY in thematic analysis: The event is intended to bring together doctoral researchers from a range of disciplines and institutions in order to develop a network of researchers who can collaborate in this practise and who might engage in further discussion and sharing of expertise in the future. The event will be co-facilitated by academic and non-academic researchers in order that a wealth of research experience is drawn upon and shared.

The event has been designed around a set of shared values, that thematic analysis is: an inherently creative process; one of a number of potential options for the analysis of qualitative data; about data expansion as well as data management; and about more than just coding.
We have 30 places available at this event for doctoral researchers from across the SWDTP institutions (and beyond). Lunch and refreshments will be provided on both days of the event. We do ask that participants attend both days of the event and that they commit to reading the (small) data set before they attend the workshop.

If you would like to book a space at this event then please send an email to Sandy Allan: A.J.Allan@exeter.ac.uk by the 4th May 2017. In your email please provide details relating to your discipline of study, your university institution, and your year of study. Your place will be confirmed by email on the 5th May and full  programme and venue details and the data set will be sent to you at this point.
