Event details

Information

The Impact and Engaged Research Network and Global Uncertainties Group would like to invite you to this half-day event focused on engaging with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and wider Whitehall.

The event will feature:

  • A presentation from Dr Matthew Preston, Head of International Security and Institutions at the FCO
  • Dr Matthew Preston will also provide a flavour of the role that analysis plays in the policymaking process in the FCO; and the implications of that for those that provide analysis, whether from internally in the FCO or the outside, such as academia.
  • Presentations from academics as they share their own experience of working with the FCO followed by time for discussion and a networking lunch.

Biography

Dr Mathew Preston has been a Research Analyst in the Multilateral Research Group at the FCO since 2003 (and headed the Group from 2009-16).  In this role, he has provided research, analysis and policy advice on a wide range of global themes and international organisations, particularly the UN.  This has ranged from the UN Security Council and the General Assembly to the more obscure reaches of the UN system, and has covered issues such as peacekeeping, mediation, human rights, war crimes, sanctions, North-South politics, and beyond.  He has also negotiated for the UK at eight sessions of the UN General Assembly, and a similar number of sessions of the Human Rights Council and its predecessor the Commission on Human Rights.  Before joining the FCO, he gained his doctorate and subsequently lectured in International Politics at Oxford University.
