From Albion to the Regions of the North: Russians in Devon, Devonians in Russia
An exhibition to commemorate the centenary of Russia's 1917 October Revolution
This exhibition examines cultural and military links between Devon and Russia, from the 1700s to the present day, showcasing the Devon and Exeter Institution's unique collection of books about Russia by Devon authors, but also revealing forgotten historical connections, such as the involvement of men from the Devonshire Regiment in Britain's little-known military intervention in the Russian Civil War in 1919-20.

There will be three free lunchtime talks at the DEI during the exhibition about aspects of the Russian-Devon collection by Dr Muireann Maguire (University of Exeter) on “‘Cheerful country Russia!’: The Devonshires in the North Russia Campaign of 1918-19” (Friday, October 6th, 2017), Dr Roger Cockrell (Emeritus Fellow, University of Exeter) on “Exeter University: the Russian Connection” (Friday, October 13th, 2017) and Mr Trevor Thynne (former Head of Russian at Torquay Boys' Grammar School) on “Russian teaching in Devon Schools- a personal perspective” (Friday, November 3rd, 2017). All talks begin at 1pm.
Entry to the exhibition and the talks is free.
“From Albion to the regions of the North: Russians in Devon, Devonians in Russia” is curated by Dr Muireann Maguire, Lecturer in Russian (Modern Languages, University of Exeter). The exhibition has been supported by the Devon and Exeter Institution, the University of Exeter, and the Keep Military Museum, Dorchester.
