Talk by Dr Mary Synge: “'Revolutionary Evolution in Charity” in Melbourne, Australia

The evening will include a dinner and short presentation entitled “Revolutionary Evolution in Charity” by Dr Mary Synge (Associate Professor in Law). The presentation will outline various aspects of Charity Law, including her recent research and will welcome discussion. Mary’s research has mainly concerned questions of charitable status, with particular regard to fee-charging charities (e.g. independent schools) and religious organisations, but also issues which affect public trust and confidence in the sector. Mary is travelling to Australasia as a Visiting Scholar to develop an international research network, and will be meeting with academics, regulators, and practitioners in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, before speaking at the Australia and New Zealand Charity Law Association in Wellington at the end of April.

Taking place at Wine 1160, guests will arrive from 18:30 for food from 19:00, this event will also be a fantastic opportunity to meet with other local alumni and reconnect with old classmates. Mary will be attending the event with her husband Tim, who also attended Exeter, graduating in 1985. This event has been kindly organised by volunteers of the Melbourne alumni chapter.

Venue directions: Tram number 6 stops right outside (stop 43), tram 16 (stop 57) stops very close. The venue is close to Armadale station, and there is street parking outside.

Biography: Dr Mary Synge is a graduate of the University of Exeter (Law 1985). Mary began her career working as a Commercial Property Solicitor at Linklaters (London), followed by freelance legal writing, before re-entering academia in 2009. Mary returned to Exeter in April 2016 as Associate Professor in Exeter’s Law School. She still finds it odd to climb the Amory steps and walk into a staff office rather than the Law Library!
