Event details

Guided tour of the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum

The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum is home to one of the largest collections of material on the moving image in Britain - 75,000 items with 1,000 items on display. This includes Magic Lanterns, rare books and publicity materials such as posters.

Bill Douglas  – a Legacy

Bill Douglas (1934-1991) was one of British cinema’s most innovative auteurs.  As well as making films, he and his friend Peter Jewell assembled a remarkable collection of over 50,000 items – and generously gifted these to the University.  Their collection founded the museum two decades ago and Bill’s legacy to the University lives on through providing study materials for students and researchers, as well as visiting school children and the local community and film enthusiasts and experts.

In the most recent academic year, the Museum held a series of 20th anniversary events to mark its opening.  The collection was used in 122 classes with 1819 students looking at 3843 items and the museum welcomed 8904 visitors to our galleries, including leading film critic Mark Kermode who made this film about his visit to the Museum for his ‘KermodeUncut’ video blog.

Tour Guide - the Curator

Dr Phil Wickham, the Museum’s Curator, has been working on the collection for the past ten years and has welcomed thousands of visitors to the showcase of the magic of the cinema.  Previously a Curator and Information Officer at the British Film Institute, Phil has extensive knowledge of the collection and continues to write and lecture on British film and television as well as leading the museum.
