Abstract
This lecture looks at offstage Shakespeare in the spirit of Bottom’s promise to his fellow-actors, in 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream', that in the woods they will be able to “rehearse most obscenely and courageously”.
What connects the offstage with obscenity? What offstage labour is involved in making theatrical magic happen? And what happens when we use digital technologies to take Shakespeare outside the physical space of the theatre?
