How can football help to engage men and boys in preventing violence against women?

The #metoo movement has brought sexual harassment and sexism to the forefront of popular attention. No sector, profession or country, it seems, has been free from this and football and sport is no different. But while it’s clear that the abuse suffered by so many victims must never happen again, it’s not always clear what we can do to make that happen. This is especially the case for men and boys. Football provides powerful role-modelling: how can we harness this to engage men and boys in prevention work?

We invite you to join us for food and a viewing of the thought-provoking film about masculinity, “The Mask You Live In” followed by discussion with a panel of experts from the community and the University of Exeter. We will also showcase the exciting new project ‘Football Onside’ between Exeter City Community Trust and the University of Exeter which aims to empower those working in football and sports to prevent violence against women by being active bystanders.

The ESRC Festival of Social Science is a celebration of the social sciences. It began life in 2002 as Social Science Week - a collection of around 25 events, mainly seminars aimed towards an academic audience. Over the years Social Science Week has grown to a much larger and more inclusive 'festival' of activities, aimed at policymakers, business, the public and young people alike.

This event is funded by the ESRC and the University of Exeter Law School, and jointly hosted by the University of Exeter and Exeter City Football Club.

St James Park is located in the heart of Exeter, and like many traditional stadiums, is built right into the surrounding community and is situated a short walk from the city centre.
