Yuhei Hasegawa: 'Leopold Amery and monetary policy'

Event details

Abstract

Leopold Amery was a British Conservative politician in the first half of the twentieth century, who was the Secretary of State for Colonies and Dominions in the 1920s and the Secretary of State for India during the Second World War. Historians often see him as a champion of the British Empire and successor of Joseph Chamberlain and Alfred Milner. In terms of fiscal policy, He was a staunch advocate of Tariff Reform (introduction of imperial preference). However, it has been relatively neglected that he produced plenty of comments and political interference regarding monetary policy as well. This paper will try to trace his thought on the question of currency and to locate monetary dimension in his economic and imperial thought.
