Professor Dong Nguyen: Natural Language Processing (NLP) for computational social science

Professor Dong Nguyen is assistant professor at Utrecht University. She was previously a research fellow at the Turing Institute. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Twente having received a master's degree from the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Twente.

Abstract
Natural Language Processing (NLP) for computational social science: opportunities and challenges
Massive digital datasets, such as social media data, provide the opportunity to study language use and behaviour in a variety of social situations on a very large scale. However, to fully leverage their potential for research in the social sciences, new computational approaches are needed. First, will present several studies in which we use large-scale computational text analysis to study linguistic and social phenomena using online data. I will then conclude with my perspective on a few big challenges that arise in interdisciplinary computational text analysis.

Professor Nguyen has worked on various topics in Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval. She is especially interested in computational text analysis for research questions from the social sciences and humanities. She often studies social media data.
