Join Exeter University’s Digital Humanities Lab and Special Collections, to grow the number of Wikipedia entries written about Heritage Collections. These can be from the Special Collections, the Cinema Museum, or a collection/individual that interests you. The University of Exeter is providing a space for our educators, staff and students to drop-in informally to share their knowledge and become confident editors, with the support of our trainers.

The aim of the session is to empower staff and students to write Wikipedia articles, whilst making our knowledge of related material held in our collections accessible. There will be an opportunity to make additions to existing Wikipedia articles and to create new articles.

We particularly encourage participants to write about women’s history to celebrate our Special Collections, the subject of a recent online resource created by volunteers at http://hypatia.exeter.ac.uk/exhibits.

The editathon takes place from 13:00-15:00 and support will be provided around the following:

  • How to get started with wikis and Wikipedia;
  • Creating a new article;
  • Notability criteria and the collaborative editing process;
  • Uploading content and adding references;
  • Collaborative editing, informal group discussion and networking.

Please bring a laptop as desktop and laptop computers will be limited.

If you don’t have one already, you may wish to create a Wikipedia account ahead of the event: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CreateAccount
