Abstract

Optimisation, Quadrature and Inference: pragmatic Bayesianism in practice

Over the past decade Bayesian non-parametric models, particularly Gaussian Processes, have been widely researched. The use of flexible function modelling has had impact in Bayesian Optimisation and Quadrature as well as in direct data models. This talk will overview the benefits and the drawbacks of Gaussian Processes, showcasing their impact both methodologically and practically.

14.30-15.30 - Seminar from Professor Steve Roberts, Director of the Oxford-Man Institute, Professor of Information Engineering, University of Oxford.  Steve heads the Pattern Analysis and Machine Learning Research Group in the Department of Engineering Science at Oxford and his main area of research lies in machine learning approaches to data analysis.

15.30-17.30 - Join us in the the Xfi Social Space for a reception with mulled wine, canapes and mince pies.  The reception will include a poetry reading at 16.00 from Judy Brown. Judy is a poet who this summer was a Creative Fellow in the University's Arts & Culture fellowship programme in which artists collaborate with research academics.  Judy spent the summer working with Professor Peter Challenor and his team who specialise in uncertainty quantification.  Judy will share a couple of the poems that came from this collaboration.
