Uncover Higher Education Programme launched
Over 300 visitors, made up of students from schools across Devon, Dorset and Cornwall in Year 9 and their parents/guardians attended a successful launch day for Uncover Higher Education (HE) Programme on Saturday 18 March 2017 on the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus.
Uncover HE is a widening participation programme, which consists of an interactive series of classroom sessions and university visits, delivered by trained student ambassadors, that aim to provide pupils with information about progression options post-16 and -18, including introducing the concept of higher education. The support and information offered by the university students aims to inform, inspire and focus the pupils enrolled on the programme and subsequently improve their motivation and performance at school. The programme is targeted at pupils in years 9-11 who are statistically less likely to progress to higher education.
The launch day welcomed the new cohort of participants onto the Uncover HE programme. The day provided those that attended with an opportunity to find out further information about the programme and included: a campus tour; an opportunity to meet student ambassadors who deliver the programme; and some interactive sessions aimed at providing further information about next steps.
Outreach Manager, Dr Karl Devincenzi said: “I am delighted to welcome students from schools across the South West on to our campus for the launch of this fantastic programme aimed at informing students of available future pathways.
The programme, delivered primarily by current undergraduate students, provides a great opportunity to examine future options and explore what could be possible at a higher education institution. I am particularly pleased to see how parents/guardians are supporting their students giving up part of their weekend to seek further information about the programme. I look forward to their continuing support over the next three years.”
Feedback received from the launch included: “My daughter enjoyed herself immensely. She was completely bitten by the University of Exeter bug and has been grinning all weekend. As parents, we found the session to be extremely informative. Student ambassadors were exceptionally enthusiastic and confident. Their enthusiasm was very catching.”
