Exeter leaders recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours List

Professor Caroline MacEwen was awarded Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for Services to Ophthalmology and Healthcare Leadership during the Covid-19 Response. 

Meanwhile, Wol Kolade has been bestowed with the Commander of the Order of the British Empire honour, for services to financial services.  

Professor MacEwen is a member of the University of Exeter’s Council, and serves as the Independent Lead for Ethics and Human Resources.  

Carrie is Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and immediate past President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and also acts as  Ophthalmology Specialty Adviser to the Scottish Government, amongst other high-profile roles. She has published more than 150 papers, written or edited several textbooks and book chapters and is a section editor for EYE.  

Wol Kolade is a member of the University of Exeter Business School’s Board of Advisors. A Managing Partner at private equity firm Livingbridge, Wol has an MBA from Exeter’s Business School.  

He has a deep interest in healthcare and education, and sits on the boards of a number of schools and universities. He is chairman of the Guys and St Thomas' Charity and also sits on the boards of NHS Improvement as a non-executive director, working to help the NHS to meet its short-term challenges and secure its future.  

He sits on the advisory council of Level20, a not for profit organisation working to improve gender diversity in the private equity industry.  In 2019 he was appointed as trustee of Somerset House. Wol was also made an Honorary Graduate of the University of Exeter in 2013/14.
