Council chair
The University’s governing body, Council, will have a new Chair from August 2012. Sarah Turvill graduated with a Law degree from Exeter in 1975 and is now Chair of Wills International Ltd, a leading global firm of insurance brokers. She succeeds Russell Seal. The Chair of Council is a part-time non-executive role.

International Exeter report
The International Office has published its Annual Report detailing activities undertaken during the second year of implementing the University's Internationalisation Strategy. It includes information on partnership engagement, international recruitment, study abroad and other performance measures. Hard copies of the report can be obtained by contacting Dr Shaun Curtis, Director of International Exeter.

India visit
The Vice-Chancellor and senior colleagues will be visiting India later this month to strengthen institutional links. The University's Representation in India will be opened officially in Bangalore on 16 Nov, in the presence of David Willetts MP, Minister for Universities and Science. The launch will see the release of a 40 page brochure detailing the extent of Exeter's collaboration with India. During the visit Memoranda of Understanding will be signed with 3 Indian universities, IIM-B, IISc and NIAS.

Impact awards
Almost 100 entries have been submitted for the inaugural Exeter Impact Awards – a fantastic response from all Colleges. Shortlisted projects will be announced online next week. A Gala Dinner on 7 Dec will announce winners and celebrate the diverse range of research taking place across the University. The awards are supported by Midas Group.

Employability expansion
Careers advice for Exeter students on the Cornwall Campus has been expanded. Jenny Clark and Elaine Munro-Lott are the Careers Consultants, Antonia Coppen and Ian Osborne deliver the Exeter Award and eXfactor courses to build student employability skills – contact them via email. Josie Turner is the Employment Services Officer so liaises with local and national employers to create campus events and work experience. She has recently launched Student Campus Partnership internships for students to undertake paid work within the University. Employability and Graduate Development has invested in the My Career Zone online system to deal with all aspects of managing student careers information and data. For info contact Leanne Fennell-Green.

Careers Fair
The Meet Your Future Careers Fair is taking place on the Cornwall Campus on Wed 16 November, 10am-3pm in the Daphne du Maurier building. The event is organised by the Careers Advisory Service on behalf of University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter, and will cater for the aspirations of students and graduates of both institutions. At the fair, students from all years and disciplines can meet and talk informally with graduate recruiters about internship programmes, vacation work and graduate careers. There will be over 45 stands of organisations and training providers, from Coodes Solicitors and Fugro Seacore to the National Trust and the Royal Air Force – full list and more info is online.

Sad news
Many staff and students will have been deeply saddened to learn of the recent death of Toby Goaman-Dodson, second year Geography postgraduate research student who had been reported missing. Toby was a popular member of the Cornwall Campus community and highly respected for the excellent quality of his work. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

New roles
Lynne Tucker will join the University in December in the new post of Chief Information Officer leading Exeter IT, based at the Streatham Campus. Derfel Owen is Student Engagement and Participation Development Manager, a new role between Academic Services and the Students’ Guild, to ensure that students play a more active part in shaping their learning experience.

Running route
A new 1 mile running and orienteering route has been set up on the Cornwall Campus as part of a £61,452 grant in National Lottery funding from Sport England. The grant, intended to encourage student participation in sport, as part of the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games, will also see the creation of new recreational sport clubs and an interactive information hub called FLEXSI. The new running route around the campus is signposted with green markers.

Talking telephone numbers
The Exeter campuses direct lines have now switched over to work with prefix 72, rather than the old 26. The main University number has not changed, and remains 01392 661000. Switchboard is now housed in the new University reception, the latest part of the Forum project to be completed. The Innovation Centre on the Streatham Campus now has its own switchboard on 01392 247931.

Award hopes
The Drama department’s collaborative partnership with dramatist Howard Barker is nominated for the 2011 Times Higher Education awards in the category of Excellence and Innovation in the Arts. Results are announced on 24 Nov.

Equality groups
An Age Equality Group will meet for the first time on Wed 23 Nov. This adds to the University’s existing Equality Groups for gender, race, disability and LGBT which are open to both staff and students. Involvement is welcomed from all age groups and all areas of the University - contact the Equality & Diversity Team.

Study garden
Library users at the St Luke’s Campus can now work in the tranquil setting of a new study garden. The disused area at the back of the library was transformed by the University grounds team. Library staff applied for funding of just over £4,800 from the Annual Fund, which is made up of donations from alumni. The Annual Fund supports individual projects which will benefit students.

Graduate Destinations
Employability & Graduate Development staff will shortly be contacting over 3,800 recent Exeter graduates to find out their employment and study destinations six months on. This data collection is part of a national Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey. More info online.

Learning and Development
To receive a new-look monthly mail out on learning and development opportunities for staff from all internal learning providers, email sld@exeter.ac.uk

Fathers in focus
Fathers of children (3-5 years old) are being asked to help with research. This could be a short online survey or a more detailed home visit. Contact Elizabeth Parry on 01392 725019 or by email.
