Guardian top ten
The University of Exeter has been rated as one of the top ten UK universities in the Guardian University Guide 2013. The league table ranks Exeter tenth out of 116 UK higher education institutions. We are now in the top ten of the three main UK higher education league tables, as well as being ranked in the top one per cent of institutions globally.

QAA commendation
The University has been commended in the QAA institutional review for the enhancement of student learning opportunities. This is great recognition of all the work that has been accomplished on student engagement. The maximum number of commendations possible is two (although no institution has achieved two so far). The review also confirmed that the University’s academic standards and the quality of students’ learning opportunities meet UK objectives, and identifies some key initiatives as good practice. The key findings letter can be accessed on a secure web page using University login details.

Prestigious awards
The EPSRC awarded two out of four of its first ever Fellowships in Manufacturing, each worth around £1 million, to Dr Geoffrey Nash and Dr Harish Bhaskaran in CEMPS. Professor of Education Wendy Robinson has won one of 15 doctoral studentship awards from the Higher Education Academy. Professor David Stephenson and Professor Jim Haywood in Mathematics have won prestigious research prizes from the Royal Meteorological Society. Joanna Alfaro Shigueto received the Whitely Award for inspirational conservation leadership, worth £30,000. Joanna is a recent graduate of the Centre for Ecology and Conservation at the Cornwall Campus.

Recent grants
The Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) is a major partner in two of four NERC funded consortia. Prof Kevin Gaston (ESI), Dr Karen Anderson (ESI/Geography), and Prof Patrick Devine-Wright (Geography) have been awarded £900,000 as part of the urban landscapes consortium, and Dr Juliet Osborne (ESI) receives £600,000 as part of the consortium on lowland multifunctional landscapes. Dr Susan Kelly and Dr Michael Morrison, Egenis, are part of an international consortium awarded £17,887 from the ESRC to hold seminars on changes in diagnosis and diagnostic technology. Prof Andrew Massey, Politics, has been awarded £10,000 from the Viking Trust to support his international work on Good Governance and Global Governance. Associate Prof Leone Niglia, Centre for European Legal Studies, has won a £10,000 grant from the British Academy for a project on European Law and Constitutional Crisis.

Sport Park development begins
More than £8million is being invested at the Sports Park on Streatham Campus. Kier Construction has begun development work around the water pitch, outdoor tennis courts and hockey pitch. Fencing is going up and footpaths around the pitches will change – see map. Phase one should be completed by mid-September. Project updates will be published online and plans are also on display in the Sports Park reception.

Green gains
The University has been awarded a First Class Award for the fourth year running and ranked 24 out of 145 in the People & Planet Green League 2012. Kay House, the state-of-the-art music facility located at Duryard, won one of the first ever Greenbuild awards, which celebrate excellence in sustainable buildings.

Car parking
The former contractors’ car park located on North Park Road, opposite the Innovation Centre, has now become Car Park D, raising the number of spaces on Streatham Campus by 154 to 1475. This car park can be used by University permit holders only during weekday working hours, although in graduation week (16-20 July) it will be reserved for graduands and their guests.

Rugby champs
The University of Exeter Women’s Rugby 7’s team has been crowned British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Champions. The University is currently sitting in 7th position out of 149 institutions in the annual BUCS rankings, having amassed our highest points tally ever in BUCS competition.

Medical School update
The creation of the Medical School is progressing as planned, with changes to PCMD designed to not impact on current students’ studies. It is hoped to reach a final agreement shortly. Exeter will admit 120 UK medical students and 10 international students a year, with Plymouth admitting 80 UK medical students and six international students and all 64 dental students a year. Students will still work in healthcare settings around the South West. The University of Exeter Medical School will be based at the St Luke's Campus and at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where facilities are being expanded through a new teaching and research centre. In Cornwall, the University of Exeter Medical School will continue to operate from the European Centre for Environment and Human Health and the Knowledge Spa in Truro

Medical School appointment
Dr Stuart Carney has been appointed Vice-Dean (Education) of the University of Exeter Medical School, and will join on 1 July. He will lead the review of the School's Curriculum. He joins from the UK Foundation Programme.

Obituary
Nitin Purandare, Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at PCMD has sadly died. Our thoughts are with his colleagues, friends and family.

Café changes
Investment in catering and retail facilities on the Streatham campus in recent years has resulted in an exciting and diverse range of places to eat, drink and socialise. As a result of these changes, the University has made the decision to cease running three outlets which are amongst the oldest. At the end of the summer term Amory’s, Harry’s and Queens will officially close. The spaces which the cafes currently occupy will be retained as key social learning space for students and academic staff. There will be no compulsory redundancies.

Professional services finalists
Look online to see the finalists in this year’s Professional Services Recognition Awards. The winners will be announced on 14 June.

The Lasok Law library is moving to its new home on Level -1 of the Forum Library during 29 May – 7 June, where the collections will be available alongside all the other student services in the Forum. Materials will be unavailable for a short period only as they transfer between libraries. The space vacated by the current Law Library in Amory is part of a £1 million refurbishment project which will deliver new space for the Law School on the upper floor and a new Amory Study Centre. For info or a tour of the new Lasok Law Library, contact Patrick Overy.

Employability update
The Employability and Graduate Development team has moved into the Forum where the Career Zone has experienced a 900% increase in student footfall, email and online enquiries. The online My Career Zone has launched the full system of events, the Exeter Award, vacancies, appointments and careers information. 400 students came to the first Forum careers fair.
