India links
The Vice-Chancellor and senior colleagues are visiting India to strengthen institutional links. The University's representation in India will be opened officially in Bangalore on 16 Nov, in the presence of David Willetts MP, Minister for Universities and Science. During the visit Memoranda of Understanding will be signed with 3 Indian universities, IIM-B, IISc and NIAS. There are currently 180 students from India studying here.

Library survey - win an iPad
The Library Quality survey is your chance to have your say about library services on our Exeter campuses. Fill in survey online before 1 Dec and you could win an iPad. Student views really do count – past responses to this survey have led to an extra £75k being invested in core texts, and the ‘I want one of these!’ student book suggestion scheme where everything recommended was purchased.

Student Travel Survey
Last year, the student travel survey showed that 68% of students walk to campus each day. The answers given by students were used to inform the University’s Sustainable Travel Plan for the Exeter Campuses 2010 -2015.Fill in this year’s student travel survey for a chance to win London Eye Tickets and restaurant vouchers. It will take less than 10 minutes. Deadline is 3 Dec. For info contact Julia Jack.

Consider your neighbours
Socialising at home and in the city is an important part of the student experience - but incidents of noise and anti-social behaviour, particularly late at night, can cause serious disturbance to other residents. The University works hard to ensure we maintain a good relationship with all of our community neighbours and will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against students who engage in anti social behaviour. We work closely with local residents, the Police, Students Guild, Athletic Union, Estate Patrol and the Residence Life Team to investigate all incident reports. All students are asked to keep the noise down, especially when returning home late at night. More guidance on these issues can be found in the My Exeter Community Guide.

Student Community Wardens
Student Community Wardens encourage and promote student integration in residential areas with high student numbers. They help the Community Liaison Officer and work closely with the Students’ Guild, the local Police and the City Council to support fellow students living off campus. The team of 10 Community Wardens work across the ward areas where most students live: St James, Polsloe, Newtown, St Davids and Pennsylvania. Wardens have access to the StreetWise fund and can help to organise events that bring students and permanent residents together. Wardens wear branded ‘Community Warden’ shirts. Contact them by email.

Resident mentors
Students living in University accommodation should now be aware of their assigned Residence Life Mentor who is there to answer questions and help with any problems. Mentors all have experience of student life and knowledge of support and wellbeing services on offer within the University, and you can speak to them confidentially. Mentors visit students one evening a week, and a Residence Life Team Leader is on duty every evening in each of the four teams, so if you want to speak to someone, please contact the team.

Student Focus Groups
All students are invited to take part in one of a series of Student Focus Groups. Focus Groups are a fun and interesting way to give your opinion and make it count. The aim is to improve your student experience of university support and services. The focus for the next four groups will be based around Exeter IT (23 Nov and 6 Dec) and the Forum (30 Nov and 14 Dec). Sessions last up to 2 hours and lunch is provided. Volunteering in these Focus Groups will count towards your Exeter Award. To get involved click here to register interest. Or contact Jacqueline Maughan, Quality Manager focusgroup@exeter.ac.uk. Help with referencing
A new online resource for undergraduate students called Skills for Referencing has just been launched in ELE, and can be found under Student Resources – Undergraduate Skills. It offers advice and guidance on a range of topics, from the different systems in use at Exeter, to more advanced concepts such as the use of primary and secondary sources. There are also tips from other students on ways of avoiding the pitfalls and how to make referencing easier.

University reception
The new state-of-the-art reception at the top of the Great Hall Piazza is now open and is the latest section of the Forum project to be completed. Students are encouraged to use the informal meeting spaces and view the glass artwork, designed by South West artist Alexander Beleschenko.

New postgrad office space
New PGR offices are now open in the Old Library. College PGR administrators hold keys; priority for use will be given to final year doctoral students. The whole of the top floor of the Old Library was refurbished in Summer to create new 11 new postgraduate offices and 8 additional teaching rooms. This is just upstairs from the Research Commons, which is dedicated to quiet study for all students with its large, light and modern reading room and lots of power and data sockets.

Be meningitis aware
Students are an ‘at risk’ group for meningitis. There are over 7,000 cases of meningitis in the UK each year, all require medical attention and sadly 10% result in death. As the early symptoms of meningitis can appear like the flu or a hangover, it’s easy to mistake it for something else. Make sure you know the symptoms, trust your instincts and look out for your friends. Ensure you are registered with a GP and if in doubt, seek medical attention immediately. Download the free symptoms app for iPhone and Android.

Careers Fair - Cornwall Campus

Diwali
Students’ Guild, the International Student Support Office and the student led Asian Society organised a great celebration for Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights on 29 Oct. More than 700 people attended and enjoyed Indian street market style food, music and entertainment, as well as a fireworks display outside the Xfi building.

Exeter Mosque
Muslims recently celebrated Eid-Ul-Adha. Exeter Mosque is newly opened, the first in Devon to be build using traditional Islamic minarets. University links date back to 1978 when the first Islamic Centre was established, and students and staff are a key part of the city’s growing Muslim population. There is a Muslim prayer room in the Old Library building on Streatham campus.

Engage in equality
An Age Equality Group will meet for the first time on Wed 23 Nov. This adds to the University’s existing Equality Groups for gender, race, disability and LGBT which are open to both students and staff. Involvement is welcomed from all age groups and all areas of the University - contact the Equality & Diversity Team.
