Streetlights in Exeter
The Students' Guild is encouraging students and staff at the University to get involved with the 'Save Our Streetlights’ campaign. Under Devon County Council’s current plans, many routes that students use on a regular basis will become unlit at night. The Guild feels the Council’s plans don’t take safety into account and it has the support of the local Police, Ben Bradshaw MP, Resident Associations and the City Council. The Guild’s campaign seeks to challenge these plans and seek a commitment from the County Council to consult fully with residents on their proposals. To join more than 2000 students and staff who have had their say, go to online survey.
Postgraduate study showcase
A Postgraduate Study Fair on Weds 21 Nov, 1-3pm in the Street, Forum, Streatham Campus will give information about the range of taught Masters and research degree options available at the University of Exeter. The Fair is open to anyone interested in postgraduate study at Exeter. Staff from colleges will be available to discuss options and there will be information on how to apply and potential funding sources, including the University of Exeter Progression Scholarship.
Top employers on campus
This autumn we are seeing an exciting range of companies coming to campus keen to attract Exeter students to their placement and graduate schemes. They include Danone, HSBC, Estee Lauder, Bank of England, Lloyd’s of London, Glaxosmithkline, The Co-Operative and Diageo amongst many others. Keep checking My Career Zone.
Law Careers Fair
The Law Careers Fair is on Thurs 22 Nov, 1.30-4.30pm, in the Great Hall. This offers students of Law and other disciplines the chance to talk to over 50 employers seeking trainee solicitors, as well as other institutions, training organisations and barrister’s chambers. Exhibitors include CMS Cameron McKenna, Linklaters, Bar Council and Inns of Court and many more. For a list of all the exhibitors and further details, visit My Career Zone.
Children in Need
Today, Fri 16 Nov, the Forum has been transformed into a family friendly party for Children in Need. The BBC will be broadcasting live in regional news programmes and nationwide this evening, as we are the South West’s official ‘Party for Pudsey’. Activities will begin in earnest from 6pm and will include live music, dance and theatre, and sporting challenges. Thank you to all student groups who are fundraising or entertaining the crowds at the event. Everyone is welcome to join in; tickets aren’t necessary. The Forum will be accessible all day, unless capacity is reached during the evening broadcast; however there is also a full programme of entertainment on the Piazza (weather permitting). The library and Devonshire House will be open as normal. The NUS has joined forces with Children in Need to create the Pounds for Pudsey campaign and Exeter students across all three campuses have undertaken an exciting programme of money raising events.
New cycle lane
A new contra-flow (downhill) cycle lane is now in use on Queen’s Drive. Car drivers please be aware that cyclists will now be cycling down as well as up the hill. Cyclists are reminded to go at a reasonable speed and to use their lights when it’s dark. Find out more about cycling at the University.
Chaplaincy changes
The University Lazenby Chaplain, The Revd Clifton Graham will be taking early retirement from his duties at the university due to continuing health problems. The Revd. Dr James Theodosius, the current Chaplain for The Community of St Luke’s, has kindly agreed to take over the running of the Mary Harris Chapel on the Streatham Campus and coordination of the multi-faith chaplaincy until a replacement is identified. The university extends its thanks to Clifton for the contribution he has made to the life of the university and wishes him every happiness in his retirement.
Social media warning
The University is asking all students to think carefully about how they present themselves on social media channels given the increasing trend for employers to look up applicants on facebook, twitter and LinkedIn. A recent American study suggested that nearly half of employers check social networking sites, and over a third have rejected applicants based on what they find. It is important to realise that comments and pictures posted online may reach a much wider audience than intended.
Global Entrepreneurship Week
This week has been Global Entrepreneurship Week; a worldwide campaign to raise awareness and encourage entrepreneurship. Events have been running on our Exeter and Cornwall campuses. You still have time to join in today (Fri 16 Nov) with the SPARK conference; to promote the importance of developing enterprise skills alongside your degree. From 2-7pm at the Innovation Centre, Streatham Campus, a great line up of speakers includes Kresse Wesling from the Government’s entrepreneurs’ forum, Richard Hurtley, founder of Rampant Sporting and Patrick O’Malley from Yahoo!. Contact Joe Pearce.
Library survey
The library carries out an annual survey to gain a clear picture of what customers think of the service, and to really listen to responses – many improvements and enhancements have been a direct response to survey findings. Have your say before Fri 30 Nov, and you might even win an iPad.
More study spaces
If you fancy a change from the library, other study spaces are available. The recently refurbished Amory Study Centre, on the ground floor of the Amory building, has 240 seats along with separate bookable spaces for group work, while the bright and inspiring Sanctuary under the Great Hall has 180 seats. Both areas open between 8am-8pm.
Mumps update
There have been around 35 cases of mumps reported among Exeter students, and the numbers of new cases has now subsided. Mumps is a feverish viral illness characterised by enlargement of the glands near the ears. The Student Medical Centre advises that people who have mumps take pain relief and avoid social gatherings, including lectures for about 5 days. They encourage affected students to have a salivary test about 3 weeks after the illness to try and confirm the clinical diagnosis with an antibody test.
Postgrad suggestions needed
Are you a home/EU postgraduate student living in University accommodation or renting in the private sector? The University would like to talk to you over a free lunch as part of our research into future improvement, on Mon 19 or Tue 20 Nov at 12.30 on Streatham Campus. Contact Jacqueline Maughan to register and find out more.
Healthy and safe Halls
If you live in University residences this Fire Safety video offers valuable advice on how to stay safe and keep your home intact. Healthy Halls activities are still running, including yoga, tai chi and Nordic walking. For more info, or if you have any suggestions of activities, contact Paul Mouland.
Sporty people
Sports Scholar Amber Reed (3rd year Exercise and Sports Science) kicked 8 points helping the England Women’s rugby team beat France 23- 18. Students had success at the British Universities and Colleges Sports golf tournament at Woodhall Spa; team captain Laurie Potter won and Katie Bradbury finished runner-up in the women’s event. The University of Exeter sailing team finished second at the BUCS Fleet Racing Championships in Plymouth. Third year History student Yvanna Kurlack has been selected to represent the Great Britain Student Tennis Team competing at the BNP Paribas Master U Event in France in December. Steven Wood has joined Exeter Tennis Centre as the new Head of Student Tennis
Sports boost
Over £40,000 has been invested in new equipment at St Luke’s Sport Centre, and student entry to the gym there has been lowered. If you have missed out on intramural hockey but still want to play occasionally then consider Rush Hockey, an informal game. Contact Paul Mouland.
Office offer
The Exeter IT Software Office are selling Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus for just £50. This offer is available to University students during November 2012, and will be repeated in January 2013.
