Colleges on course
Plans have been approved to reshape our existing academic units by creating five new colleges from the existing nine schools. There are no plans to move or close subjects; indeed the University is looking to increase the number of academic staff over the next five years. The changes are designed to improve research and financial management and to create academic units of roughly the same size. Students probably won’t notice a great deal of difference in terms of teaching and learning. Two existing academic units - Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences and Business - remain as they are. Three new ones are created:

  • Humanities (to include Archaeology, Classics, Drama, English, Film, History, Modern Languages and Theology).
  • Social Science and International Studies (to include Education, Law, Philosophy, Politics and Sociology, and incorporating the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies)
  • Life and Environmental Sciences (to include Biosciences, Geography, Psychology and Sport and Health Sciences).

A change management group has been set up to ensure the changes go as smoothly as possible between now and the changeover date of 1 August 2010.

Above average applications
The University of Exeter is becoming an increasingly popular student destination, with undergraduate applications up a further 11% so far this year. This is higher than the national average.

International admissions
International student admissions this year have increased by at least 30% with students coming here from over 80 countries. Our total international population will exceed 2,400 students this year. The INTO Centre, which prepares international students to undertake degree programmes, has 658 new students registered, an increase of 46%.

Green policy
The University has launched a new and improved Environmental Sustainability policy. It sets out how we can all make a difference. Since 2004/5 the University has saved 7,000 tonnes of CO2 thanks to a variety of energy saving initiatives and through the commitment of students and staff. In Cornwall, a Green Team meeting on Thurs 19 Nov, 12-1pm will outline what Tremough Campus is doing about its environmental impacts. All welcome in SR9, Peter Lanyon Building.

Get entrepreneurial
The University is getting involved in Global Entrepreneurship Week, which carries on until 22 Nov. To book yourself onto an event go to the Employability website. Some events count towards the Exeter Award. Students Harry Cott and Amanuel Burhan are launching the first ever Exeter Entrepreneurs Society. The society will encourage innovative student enterprise from across the University. Would-be entrepreneurs will be able to access seed capital funding from the Smart Solutions support package managed by the Innovation Centre. See press release.
