University News in Brief for Students

Wednesday 21 October 2009 Events

Carnage
If you’re planning to go on the Carnage pub crawls in Exeter then please be aware that the events are going ahead without the approval of the police, the Students Guild or the University. Whilst the event is legal, the police have told us that they will be cracking down particularly hard on drunkenness or disorderly behaviour following incidents on recent Carnage events in Sheffield and Cardiff. If you’re planning to drink alcohol, then please do so moderately and look after each other.

Careers and Placement Fair
The first careers fair of the year is on Thurs 29 Oct, 11am-3pm in the Great Hall and Lower Exam Hall, Streatham Campus. Open to all students - your chance to talk to major recruiters and other organisations about internships, vacation opportunities and graduate careers. CV Clinics will be available between 10-11am and 3-4pm. To book a place on a CV clinic and to view a list of exhibitors, visit the Employability website.

Virtual fair
Or take part in a traditional careers fair in a virtual environment until 11 Dec. Get the latest information on graduate jobs and vacation opportunities from the comfort of your computer. Highlights include live web chats with employers. See the Employability website.

Masterplan exhibition
A public exhibition on the proposed masterplan for the Streatham Campus is open on 2 and 3 November in the Margaret Hewitt Room, Reed Hall from 10am to 5pm. It is being staged in conjunction with Exeter City Council. The masterplan takes a look into the future as to how the Streatham Campus might develop up until 2026. It identifies possible future development sites, although at this stage we don't know what projects might be completed. The major area for development is to the east of the Amory building. For more information contact Sue Franks.

Wednesday timetabling
The Dean of Taught Programmes and the Guild Education Officer have been working closely with Schools and the timetable office to resolve cases where students could not participate in sport or other volunteering activities on Wednesday afternoons due to compulsory classes. We will be reviewing procedures for the future to ensure that we avoid such clashes wherever possible.

Fridge magnets
All Students living off campus in Exeter should now have received a special fridge magnet detailing refuse/recycling information for their area. The magnets were delivered to hundreds of households last week in partnership with the City Council. Please keep your fridge magnet - you can also set up your own refuse collection email reminder on the Exeter City Council website.

Police event
If you are a student with any views to share with Exeter police about life in the city then come to the student 'PACT' meeting on Tues 3 Nov at 6.30pm in Queen’s lecture theatre 1. 'PACT' stands for 'Partners and Communities Together'- these meetings have been taking place all over the city for some time, but this is the first meeting specifically arranged for students. We hope you can come - please contact Rory Cunningham on 01392 263721 with queries.

Winter fuel
Thanks to all-round effort in reducing electricity usage and keeping heating under control, the University emissions of carbon dioxide were reduced by 1% last winter, in spite of much colder weather. We are more than meeting our Carbon Management Plan target of a 2% annual reduction and have saved £2.16m on energy and water as a result of reduced consumption. See the Sustainability website.

How's it Going week
A week of special activity on all campuses from 2 Nov will ask ‘How’s it Going?’. Visit the lunchtime stand in Devonshire House, or come along to wellness events at the Sports Park on Wednesday. Each day on Cornwall campus an exhibition in the Refectory will range from equality to academic support to food and fitness. Get to know your Resident Tutor, student mentor, or subject librarian in special events. Look out for roaming head massage, WebCT study skills modules demonstrations and more.

ONEWORLD Week
The same week will celebrate cultural inclusivity. ONEWORLD is a festival celebrating diversity, with celebrity guests. See events listing or contact Sam Miles. There are further events in November to mark Black History Month, check E and D website for updates.

Switch off
Exeter students living in the University’s halls of residence will compete against each other to save energy. The Guild has teamed up with the NUS and the University to give out prizes to students who sign up to become Eco-Power Rangers – residents who pledge to use their energy carefully. The winning hall will receive a celebratory end-of-year party. Email ecopowerrangers@studentswitchoff.org or join the “University of Exeter Eco-Power Rangers” Facebook group.

Cornwall news
Representatives from academic schools and Halls in Cornwall are needed for FXU Student Council, where debates aim to improve the student experience. Contact Janice Mitchelson for more details. There are new initiatives around the Cornwall campus to improve recycling rates. Also, FXU ale has been developed, and is on sale in the Stannary bar and around Falmouth – a percentage of revenue generated from each pint goes back to FXU. Also check out FXU’s first student owned bar – Woodlane Bar, with free hire for societies.

Or use the same email to arrange access to practice rooms.

Main Library Planning
Planning has been taking place to ensure that the redevelopment of the Main Library on Streatham Campus is the quality of a ‘Top-10’ University. The aim is to create a good study environment, ensuring that collections are easy-to-locate, whilst exploiting technology. It’s anticipated that the floors will be updated individually, allowing the library to operate throughout the Forum development. Current plans state that the work starts on the lower floor in June 2010. See the Library Redevelopment webpages.
