Terrific Times
The Times newspaper published their league table today - we have risen to 9th place overall. Areas of high performance include the National Student Survey, the proportion of students getting good degrees, the Research Assessment Exercise and Completion Rates. Exeter is 7th in the subjects table as a whole and of our 31 subject areas, there are nine ranked in the top five. In 2005 the University was ranked in 34th position in the Times league table: no other university has moved so far or so fast.
Kick start
Kick start your career with the University’s Graduate Support Package. It offers free careers advice, free training in job hunting skills, help with work placements, a support group in London, Exeter and Falmouth, and advice from alumni. This all helps when job hunting in the current recession. Call 01392 264493 or see the Employability website.
Forum progress
The planning application for the Forum has been submitted and the supporting works in the Old Library are moving on well. Thanks to those who responded about joining the Student Services Consultation Group; to everyone who has already responded to the online survey; and to the members of the Forum Postgraduate and Forum Accessibility consultation groups for their ongoing help.
The online survey about the Student Services Centre facilities is still open and we'd love to know what you think - go to this web page.
Business build
The £18 million project to extend the Business School will soon begin. Enabling work commences this month, and building on the site will begin in July. The new building will provide research, teaching, learning and social space and aims for completion in early 2011.
Masters motivation
If you’re thinking about studying on a Masters programme, remember that many taught masters degrees don’t require an undergraduate degree in a directly related subject area, enabling students to switch and improve their employability as a result. There is no set deadline for application. Many Scholarships for current undergraduates are still available, see: www.exeter.ac.uk/pgprogression
Green standard
Thanks to students and staff thinking green, the University has been awarded Carbon Trust Standard certification. Our carbon footprint has reduced by 4.2%. Usage per student has reduced by 8.1% from 1,695 tonnes to 1,559.
The certification puts Exeter among the top 10 universities for carbon management. £1 million is being invested in cost effective energy saving projects.
Open Days
10,000 visitors are expected at the next pre-application Open Day on Tues 23 June at Streatham and St Luke’s campuses. The event will cover all undergraduate programmes and will include a range of presentations, tours and information fairs. Contact Ruth Tyrer with queries R.Tyrer@exeter.ac.uk. The next Open Day on the Cornwall Campus is Fri 3 July.
Award finalised
If you signed up for The Exeter Award and are graduating this year, please don't forget to complete your Award and book your sign-off appointment with a Careers Adviser to be eligible for the award ceremonies later this month. See the Exeter Award website.
Lovely locks
The University Cycle Forum has launched a new scheme selling subsidised bike locks. Silver-rated locks with a retail price of over £35 will be sold for £5 from the Parking Office in Lafrowda House with payment by cheque or credit card (upon production of University ID). Car parking revenue subsidises the price.
Election results
In Cornwall, the newly elected Executive Officers are Finn Raven, Environment and Ethics Officer; Penny Tomkins, Community Action Officer; Andy Edwards, Sports Officer and Nick Jarvis, Equal Opportunities Officer. Visit the FXU website. For Exeter results see the Exeter Guild website.
On the Move
'Students on the Move' is an initiative being run by the University, the Student's Guild and the City Council. Exeter City Council's services will receive funds from the University to help get rid of student waste that gets left at the end of term, not always in line with regular rubbish collection times. All Exeter students will receive a special green envelope containing stickers to attach to bagged waste, which will be picked up between collection times by the City Council. Students received some negative press last year due to rubbish build up - we hope this initiative will make a real difference. Contact Rory on 01392 263721 or email r.j.cunningham@exeter.ac.uk
Bill Douglas displays
Students have put together two new displays featuring previously unexhibited items from The Bill Douglas Centre Collections. In Queen’s, by the café, find ‘Treasures from the Bill Douglas Centre’ The display aims to tempt those that have not yet made it to the free, public museum come down to the galleries in the Old Library. A special display at the BDC is ‘Page, Stage, Screen and Beyond: The Story of Adaptation’ with material on Shakespeare, Dickens, Dracula and fairy tales. See the Bill Douglas Centre website.
St Luke’s library
A £1m refurbishment project is underway at St Luke's Haighton Library. The decanting of stock from the library to the Dance Studio will start on 9 June. See the the Projects website.
Old Library
An element of the Forum project is to create a world class research space. The Old Library will provide quiet study space throughout the development phase of the Forum and create an area of mobile shelving in Level 0 to temporarily store stock whilst work is being carried out in other library areas. The Arabic and Islamic Collection and the Roborough Reference Collection will be moving to a temporary new location in level 1 of the Old Library at the close of exams, in the week beginning 22 June 2009. Contact Lee Snook L.M.Snook@exeter.ac.uk.
Books back
Final year students are reminded to return all Library books and pay all outstanding Library fines by 13 June, or risk not being allowed to graduate.
