Exeter has been named the top university in the region.

Exeter secures position as ‘best of the South West’ in influential rankings

Exeter has been named the top university in the South West in the influential The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019.

The University also rose two places to 12th nationally in the overall ranking which was released on Friday, September 21 2018.

The league table cites Exeter’s increased spending on student facilities and services, improved staffing levels and one of the highest degree completion rates in the country as being behind the University’s rise in the rankings.

The guide also highlights Exeter as having one of the highest numbers of student volunteers at any UK institution, while all students are offered tuition in foreign languages and career management skills are also built in to their studies.

University of Exeter Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Sir Steve Smith said: “I am absolutely delighted that Exeter has re-established its position as the best university in the South West, as well as rising in the overall national rankings.

“The University is committed to providing the very best teaching and research environment for our students and staff, and it is very pleasing that this is recognised in these rankings.

“With new initiatives such as the Global Systems Institute launched, coupled with our ability to attract the very best staff and students from across the world, Exeter will continue to strive to strengthen our position among the very best universities not just nationally, but worldwide.”

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 provides students and their parents with an invaluable first reference point on the path to finding a university place. It contains full profiles of all universities and the leading colleges of higher education.

The ranking is made up of nine indicators including student satisfaction with teaching quality and their wider student experience, research quality, graduate prospects, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, service and facilities spend, and degree completion rates.
