Living in the community
Welcome to Exeter!
Exeter is a great place to live and study. Whether you’re living in University accommodation or a house in town, having your own place gives you greater freedom and independence - but also it comes with a level of responsibility.
“Zip-it!”
Please be considerate when walking home from a night out – this includes the houses you walk past on the way home. Street noise is often considered anti-social by many local residents – especially those who have to get up early for work or have young families. Some top noise tips include:
-
Keep you voices down when chatting in the garden, walking home from a night out or smoking outside.
-
Singing? Did you know that “loud singing in the early hours of the morning” was voted one of the major issues in a recent Exeter Community survey? Perhaps better to save it for the shower…
-
Try not to slam house or taxi doors when returning home.
Professor Steve Smith, Vice Chancellor of the University says “The University values its relationship with local residents and expresses a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour.”
Living off campus?
The university has recently published a new “Exeter Community Guide” stuffed full of useful information about moving in and settling into your new house and the local area. This is invaluable for all students living off campus. To download your copy, visit the The University in the Community pages of the University website or email streetwise@ex.ac.uk and we’ll send you a hard copy for free.
Student Community Wardens
A team of Student Community Wardens are employed by the university to help students living off campus. Whether you’re rubbish at recycling or insecure about your house security then the wardens can help. They work across the ward areas with the highest student populations: St James, Pennsylvania, Newtown and Polsloe. Wardens also help to organize various community projects – from gardening to street parties – which you are all welcome to get involved in too.
