Project phases

The following phases represent the key points within the project timeline. Find out more below.

Complete

We have completed this phase.

We have been working closely with academic colleagues, professional services staff and the Students’ Guild to create an Outline Business Case with the preliminary proposals for the project. This was presented to Council and we received approval to move to the next phase of the project which focused on the types of space required in the building and how these might be used.

We are now working to determine how these spaces are arranged in the building and what the overall shape of the building might be.

An expert architectural design team; AECOM with Hopkins Architects, have been appointed to help us develop the designs for the building. They are experienced in the creation of large, complex building designs worldwide for institutions across the HE sector including Harvard, Yale and Princeton Universities, Brighton College, University of Brighton, and Kings College School in London.

In progress

In progress

Exeter’s contribution to world class research plays a significant part in its reputation and to compete successfully we need to establish cutting-edge research institutes. At the heart of these institutes lies the need to co-locate a diverse range of academics and provide them with the ability to interact with a fluid network of internal and external partners such as other HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) or Industrial Partners.

How do we get involved?

The architects will be working with academic colleagues, the Guild and PS staff who will use the building.

Once we have draft designs, we will share them with everyone via an exhibition and online to gather feedback.

Coming up

In this stage we will be creating the detailed design for the building including how offices and shared areas are laid out, choosing furniture and agreeing decoration.

In parallel we will start to extend Car Park B in order that we can free up the space on Car Park D to build the building.

How do we get involved?

We will work with those who will use the building to design their particular areas. For the publically used spaces, we will invite views from across the University on their design.

In this stage we select the company who will build the building and ask them to finalise costs and start to prepare for construction.

In this stage the building is built. Our focus will be on minimising disruption for everyone including noise and dust/dirt and also ensuring everyone is kept safe.

Toward the end of this phase we will start to prepare to open the building. We will recruit and train the facilities staff who will run the building and also make plans for a launch.

How do we get involved?

We will keep you informed of developments including any changes to routes on campus or particularly noisy periods of work.

There will be opportunities toward the end of construction to provide site tours.

In this stage we open the building for use and move the staff in who will be based there. We will be ensuring the building operates as we need it to and carrying out any snagging. This process will continue for 6 months.

How do we get involved?

We want to celebrate the launch of the building with you and we will seek your thoughts on the best way to do this. .
