MA Gender and Identity in the Middle East

Location

Streatham Campus, Exeter

In this programme on Gender and Identity in the Middle East you will explore the various ways gender, individual and national identities are constructed, reproduced and challenged in the Middle East and in the West. The MA in Gender and Identity in the Middle East focuses on the changing social, cultural, economic and political contexts that shape gender roles and identities in the region.

It also addresses issues related to the diversity of Muslim cultures and societies in different geographical, social, cultural and political contexts with a focus both on contemporary and past history.  You will develop an appreciation for the changing and diverse roles of gender relationships and identities.

These issues are seldom brought together, despite the fact that the Middle East extends to Muslim dispersion abroad. Moreover, in this age of globalisation, identity formation and identity politics cut across regions in new and dynamic ways. Our MA reflects these contemporary realities and tackles gender and transnationalism in an integrated and analytically coherent way.
