Postgraduate student life

It's a common misconception that postgraduates don't have time for socialising compared to undergraduates, and while it’s true that postgraduate study is very academically demanding, that doesn’t mean there’s no time for anything else. Managing your time effectively can help you enjoy yourself; many postgraduates find that by studying during office hours they can leave evenings and weekends completely free for sport, hobbies, and social activities.

With a little planning, you’ll find that postgraduate student life at the University of Exeter is just as rich and eventful as the undergraduate experience.

Exeter campuses

At our campuses in Exeter, the Students’ Guild (Exeter’s Students’ Union) is central to student life and is recognised as one of the UK’s leading students’ unions. The Guild is a dynamic, innovative and award-winning organisation, existing to represent all the diverse students of the University of Exeter. The Guild is a member-led organisation, which means all our students have a say in the running of the Guild and it often sets national records for turnout in students’ union elections. Through the representation that the Guild is able to provide, as well as the broad and exceptional range of services and activities, we are confident that you’ll have the best possible university experience at Exeter.

In addition to the sports clubs, the Guild supports 165 societies and postgraduates are actively involved in many of these. The Postgraduate Society is dedicated to ensuring your postgraduate experience at the University of Exeter is fun and rewarding. Run by a committee of students, the Society can help you make the most of your time at Exeter.

Cornwall campuses

Students at our Cornwall campuses are represented by FXU, which jointly represents students of the University of Exeter and Falmouth University (FXU stands for Falmouth and Exeter Union). Students from each institution have their own Student President and the support of a joint Welfare President. As with the Guild in Exeter (of which you’ll automatically be a member, too), FXU will play a major role in your student experience, starting with a programme of Freshers’ activities. FXU organises events on and off campus, helps students to set up and run sports clubs and societies, has a successful Community Action and RAG base, and runs a support and advice service.
